History
Hotel Julian lies in a part of Prague 5 called the "Smichov" district that was established as a municipality in the 13th century. Its close vicinity to Prague Castle and Vltava River predetermined "Smichov" to house nobility and prosperous townsmen and it soon became a quarter of the City of Prague. In the year 1901, the nearby Kinski Garden connected "Smichov" with the Prague Castle area and provided a relaxing environment for its residents.
The building of the present Hotel Julian was built in the year 1905. It was numbered as a house 11/197 in the newly emerging Elisky Peskove Street, which was named after a famous Czech actress who also became a director of the nearby "Svanda Theatre". The building consisted of a ground floor business area and six luxury apartments on three floors all accommodating wealthy families of Prague townsmen. Unfortunately, the successful development of the house as well as the "Smichov" district was stopped after the Second World War by the time of newly established communist regime.
After the "Revolution" of 1948, all businesses and properties in the Czech Republic were torn out from the hands of private owners and put under the management of the Communist State. The building number 11/197 was put under the Commune Prague 5 management, and the Area Power Station soon replaced the successful businesses on the ground floor. The luxury apartments were divided into small flats and new families of poor workers moved in. These families paid an insignificant monthly rent of 60 or 90 CZK (2 or 3 Euro). Such rent could not obviously cover the costs of necessary repairs. After forty-one years the house turned into an uninhabitable squat and had to be closed down. Significantly at the same time, in the year 1989, the communist regime in the Czech Republic collapsed.
An era of hectic re-construction of the whole country began. In the year 1990, the house of Elisky Peskove 11/197 returned to the hands of the original owners. However the owners didn't have the strength to organize repairs of the house and were forced to sell it immediately. In 1992 the Sevcik family bought the house and decided to transform it into a quality townhouse hotel.
Their idea was to create a modern hotel within the walls of a traditional townhouse. The original building was heightened by two brand new attic floors. All former ceilings and inside walls had to be torn down and rebuilt. The Area Power Station was removed from the ground floor. The process of reconstruction was led in order to renew and preserve the original facade and artistic interior details. Large attention was paid to the repair of the original Art Nouveau style garlands and castiron interior railings and grilles. The re-construction, documented in the photos on the next page, was successfully completed in the year 1993. Since that time, HOTEL JULIAN has operated under the management of the Sevcik family.
